A glimpse into the organization

"The streets are dangerous, especially now that the summer holidays are starting," Kyle calls out in a clear, urgent voice. He works as a social worker for Where Rainbows Meet in Vrygrond, one of Cape Town's oldest townships. Once a settlement for landless laborers, it's now a jumble of corrugated iron houses where poverty, unemployment, and violence define daily life. Running water and electricity are not a given. Overcrowded schools, inadequate care, and a lack of safe play areas leave children with little prospects.

Still, Kyle tries to keep them going every day. "Go home when it gets dark. Don't walk alone. Kids get shot here because they're not in a gang. But you belong to Rainbows. You're safe here. And remember: soccer is important, but learning is more important. Stay focused."

In Vrygrond, football isn't a game, but a survival strategy. Coaches instill discipline, respect, and self-confidence—lessons just as important as goals. Because on the streets, the choice is cruel: join a gang, or become its victim.

After the speech, the celebration followed. Each child received a medal, a secondhand item of clothing, or a pair of shoes. Pride and joy filled the room; laughter and applause echoed among the containers. The older players helped out—especially the women's team, young women who are growing into the new "moms" of the community: protectors, role models, leaders.

But Where Rainbows Meet does much more than just sports. The organization offers dance classes, therapy, digital training, sewing and beading, English lessons, and programs for young parents. Three hundred children receive food, care, and education every day in their shelter. In the community garden, residents learn to grow vegetables in dry soil. And twice a day, the organization distributes food—good for some 750,000 meals a year.

Where Rainbows Meet is more than an organization. It's a sanctuary. A place where children discover their worth. A place where rainbows land—in the middle of the storm.

About the founder

Mymoena Scholtz is a South African community leader and founder of Where Rainbows Meet. After her children left, Scholtz decided to dedicate her life to community service. She took a business administration course at the New World Foundation in Lavender Hill, which led to an internship and ultimately a position as a life skills trainer. After working there for twelve years, she founded Where Rainbows Meet at the request of a group of women from Vrygrond.

Scholtz strongly believes in the power of community and the role of women as driving forces for positive change. She emphasizes the importance of patience and building trust within the community. Her work is rooted in the principle of "ubuntu," the belief in shared humanity and mutual support.

Scholtz's dedication has led to recognition both nationally and internationally. Among other honors, she has been named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Club of Kromboom.
